Safebridge to present at 'The Scale-Up of Chemical Processes' Conference

Safebridge to present at 'The Scale-Up of Chemical Processes' Conference, 17th to 19th May 2010, Edinburgh (UK)

SafeBridge Europe Ltd. is pleased to announce that Justin Mason, Managing Director, will be presenting at ‘The Scale-Up of Chemical Processes Conference 2010’, being held between 17th and 19th May at the
Radisson Blu Hotel in Edinburgh, UK.

Since the first conference in 1994, The Scale-Up of Chemical Processes has become the major international forum for the discussion of specific aspects of scale-up in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical and allied fields:

• Achieving greater process efficiency, yield and throughput
• Eliminating unsafe and non-green processes and materials
• Decreasing the costs and number of steps involved

Justin Mason will be delivering a presentation entitled ‘Potent Compound Safety Issues in Scale-Up’ at 11:15am during the morning session of day two (Tuesday 18th May). With a background in organic synthetic chemistry, and having been involved in environmental regulatory matters at the corporate level, Justin specialises in technical and strategic projects. He has undertaken innovative work in issues of exposure to highly potent molecules, in particular the use of bioassays for trace material analysis.

Commenting on his address to the conference delegates, Justin said “This non-intuitive subject of potent pharmaceutical compound safety needs to be integrated systematically into all (bio)pharmaceutical operations. In discovery laboratories for example, many potent compound operations are undertaken manually on small scale which presents exposure risk in its own unique way. In scale-up, larger quantities of potent material are handled, which may on the face of it present an increased risk. However, processing techniques change; whilst more closed processing might be adopted, operations such as vessel charging, product isolation and drying present potentially high risk and need to be controlled or contained appropriately. Pharmaceutical pipelines are getting more and more potent. Handling potent pharmaceuticals safely, some of which can have exposure limits in nanogrammes per cubic meter, remains one of the most complex engineering challenges in industry”.

The 3 day conference will deliver case studies and examples from key representatives from the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturing and processing sectors across the UK, Europe and USA.
